Wednesday May 25, Day 7

Hernando, we are here!
We have arrived safely in San Diego, praise God!

What a week we've had!
In recap - we left Sarasota a week ago on a beautiful morning.  After closing the house down, we were on the road and made a stop at the Red Lobster in Tallahassee for lunch.  What an awful, regrettable place and mistake that was.  I don't often complain about food, but this was just the worse!
We stopped for the night in Pensacola, just off exit 7 of I-10.  Routine, the normal good room, nice breakfast.
Then onward to Spring Texas with many miles of varying kinds of roads, a quick trip through Mississippi

the long, long bridges of Louisiana parishes, the rough welcome to Texas with all the construction at the border, the heavy rain and downpours of a massive thunderstorm as we got into the Houston area.
We arrived safely at Larissa's house for a wonderful, all too short visit with Larissa, Stephen and Marina.  We saw Marina's sweet solo at her school's spring concert.

Then Stephen took us all out for dinner at a neat, ($$$ :-<) Texas de Brazil near downtown Houston.  Very memorable for all the many kinds of meats and foods.

We then left for our next destination, with a stop in San Antonio for one night.  Then onward to Carlsbad Caverns in New Mexico.  We stayed the night in Ft Stockton TX at a very nice Hampton Inn which is about 2 hours from the Caverns.
The Caverns are indeed God's great work.  The Big Room was spectacular:

We left for Tucson for a one stop night at Davis Monthan AFB.  Of course you know that this is a unique Air Force Base because they dry store obsolete and excess aircraft here in the high, dry desert.  There are thousands and thousands of old aircraft from all ages stored here.
We had a nice visit there, seeing so many aircraft.

Then we had a wonderful visit with Adriana's friend from Norwich, Mare Louise.  What a sweet, gentle person!

WESTWARD HO!
We left Tucson and its wonderful, dry heat and proceed west on I-10.  About 50 miles on we picked up I-8 which takes us to San Diego, while I-10 goes onto Los Angeles.
The trip took us through some very dry scrub desert.  We descended into the Colorado River basin at Yuma Arizona, and then into California.
The border there is very quick and the welcome to California, like into Texas, is full of construction, rough roads, and lots of traffic.  The scenery changes instantly to dunes, blowing sands, and dry heat.  It's the area of the Imperial Dunes and it's nothing but sand, sand, sand.

As we neared El Centro, mankind's handprint is obvious with much irrigation and massive farms.  There is a slow rise but you can see the Sierra's up ahead as you continue west.  The clouds show that you are approaching some mountains that form the puffy, full adiabatic clouds.  As we left El Centro we passed many wind turbines on different hillsides that captures the high, blowing winds in the area.

Well, the climb up into the Sierra's is slower and very winding road for sure.  But we got across and then descended into the valleys that eventually leads us to San Diego.

It was chilly and windy by late afternoon!

OK, Family and Friends, we are getting ready for the day.  Probably a trolly tour of San Diego, then some of the big sights.  We definitely will do San Diego Zoo, Balboa Park, the Embarcadero, and more!!!
See you soon, God bless you and keep you all always!
